This book could not be more timely. Policy makers and practitioners across East Asia and the Pacific—especially in ministries of finance and health—are rebuilding health systems after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the region is grappling with a growing burden of chronic disease. While people are living longer and economies are growing, conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease threaten to undermine these gains, affecting workers in their prime and placing strain on both families and economies. In a region whose growth has long been driven by investing in its people, protecting and expanding human capital through stronger primary health care (PHC) is now imperative.
